Why This Kitchen Was Needed

This home featured a traditional French Country exterior. The homeowners wanted a modern kitchen but didn’t want to abandon the home’s established character. The solution was a transitional design that felt current and functional while respecting the traditional architecture. This required mixing modern elements with traditional touches in ways that felt intentional.

Our Approach to the Design

The design philosophy centered on combining traditional effects with modern effects as equal partners rather than having one dominate. We chose to mix inset cabinetry (traditional) with frameless cabinets (modern) within the same space. The quartzite stone became the unifying element, a natural material that works across both styles.

Creating Layers and Depth

The island design exemplifies our approach with three distinct material layers: half waterfall quartzite edge, island cabinetry color, and brushed toe kick. The three-inch-thick stone with fully flush assembly creates substantial presence. Inset doors on part of the island maintain traditional craftsmanship.

Anchoring the Cooking Zone

The back wall needed a foundation strong enough for the stone backsplash and custom hood. We selected a Wolf range top that extends with substantial knobs rather than a flat cooktop. Towers flanking the hood establish a central axis referencing traditional design while using modern materials.

Standout Features and Custom Details

Three-Inch Waterfall Island

Half waterfall design with three-inch quartzite in fully flush assembly. Creates three material layers: stone waterfall, cabinetry color, and brushed toe kick.

Mixed Cabinetry Construction

Island combines inset and frameless cabinets, mixing traditional with modern. Extended bar uses frameless exclusively, creating distinct zone with shared hardware cohesion.

Custom Stainless Steel Hood

Custom-fabricated with polished brass rivets matching cabinet hardware. Positioned above Wolf range top to balance strong quartzite backsplash and create focal point.

Backless Stone Showcase Cabinets

Upper cabinets are backless so quartzite runs wall to wall when opened. Ceiling-mounted rather than wall-mounted to achieve this stone showcase effect.

Dual Dishwasher Configuration

Dishwashers on both sides of sink with double cutlery inserts in each. Symmetrical placement maintains clean lines while doubling organizational space.

Hybrid Farmhouse-Modern Sink

Combines farmhouse functionality with modern undermount aesthetics. Visible waterfall front with contemporary installation and flush-mount cutting boards.

The Completed Transitional Kitchen

The completed kitchen successfully balances two distinct design languages. Modern elements (frameless cabinetry, waterfall edges, integrated appliances) coexist with traditional touches like inset doors and substantial hardware. The quartzite stone provides continuity throughout. The extended bar area shows how style can shift within connected space.

A Note from Our Head Designer

“This project shows what’s possible when you commit to mixing styles deliberately rather than defaulting to one or the other. The homeowners wanted modern, but the house said traditional. Rather than fight that tension, we made it the concept. Every choice, from using both inset and frameless cabinets to selecting a range top over a cooktop, came back to that philosophy. The result feels intentional throughout.”
