Why This Remodel Was Needed

Sonia and her family had lived in their Potomac home for over 16 years. The kitchen, nearly 20 years old, no longer served how they actually lived. As the most used space in the house, they wanted an investment that would transform their daily experience. The original two-tiered countertop divided the space and limited how the family could gather while cooking.

Finding the Right Design Balance

The Kellas had a specific challenge: the new kitchen needed to fit within their existing traditional home without renovating everything else. They wanted something more modern and updated, but it couldn’t feel out of place. The solution required a designer who could blend two distinct styles into one cohesive space.

How Talha Approached the Design

Talha found the right blend of modern with a touch of traditional. The design philosophy centered on creating a space that worked for how the family actually lives, not just a kitchen that looked good on paper.
The most significant design decision was converting the original two-tiered countertop into one unified level. This change transformed the kitchen’s functionality entirely. Now family members can have conversations on one side while others cook on the other.
Light gray cabinetry paired with black accents creates the transitional look Sonia wanted. The design feels fresh and current without clashing with the traditional character of the rest of their home.

Working with Boss Design Center

Sonia did extensive research before choosing a remodeler. She asked friends for referrals and searched online reviews. Boss Design Center stood out because the reviews seemed authentic and consistently positive. When she met Talha, she immediately felt he understood what she wanted and listened to her vision rather than pushing his own preferences.

The design process was thorough. Sonia walked through the showroom, viewed computer renditions, and touched every material before making selections. The team did detailed analysis to keep the project within budget. Every decision was made before construction began.

Construction brought the typical challenges of working in a lived-in home, but the crew made it as easy as possible. The same team showed up every day, kept dust contained, responded quickly to questions, and even worked around the family’s alarm system when they were away.

"Construction's never easy, but they made it as easy as possible. The same group of people came every day. They were very responsive to our needs."

A Note from Designer Talha Gursoy

Every family uses their kitchen differently. For the Kellas, the original two-tier countertop was the main barrier to how they wanted to live in their space. By unifying that surface, we created something that functions as both a workspace and a gathering spot. The transitional style let us honor the traditional character of their home while giving them the updated look they wanted.
